We have over 115 junior members and 80 mini tennis members making up our junior section. Members range from four years old to eighteen and they have the opportunity to be involved in many different ways. Our coaching team offers individual or group sessions for those who wish to improve their game and for complete beginners. Our mini tennis sessions, for the younger juniors, are fun and active and a great way to begin to learn the basics. Tennis camps are run during school holidays for all age groups. This year the Club is entering 11 teams into the junior AEGON team tennis leagues covering all age groups from U8 to U18 so that the more competitive members have the opportunity to face other Clubs. In addition, we enter the U14 Road to Wimbledon boys and girls events, and organise several friendly matches against various schools and clubs. Several of our stronger juniors are also included in our adult teams and are encouraged to attend match practice with their team members. In the school holidays we endeavour to keep the juniors busy by organising mini competitions or special events. Our most popular and exciting week of the year is the Junior Summer Tournament which always runs in the first full week of the school summer holiday. We also have regular mixed senior and junior events, pitting the skills of young and old, great fun for all involved. The senior club tournament is played from June to September and is open to junior players as well. In recent years juniors have performed well in the club tournament – with some now having their names on the senior honours board in the club house.
Junior Liaison Officer
I have been asked by the Committee to take on this new role as Junior Captain at the Club. I feel this is a privilidge and a great opportunity for me to share my experiences with younger players and also to pass on any suggestions from the Juniors to the Committee.
I started playing tennis at Storrington when I was 11 years old, playing orange and green ball squads with Caroline Matthews (mini coach). I then moved up to yellow ball and started doing squads with Nigel Matthews (head coach).
This led on to me starting to play matches at the Club such as box leagues and 'The Road To Wimbledon", where in my third year playing, I reached the County finals. The highlight of the Junior calendar at Storrington is the Junior Summer Tournament, I have played in theis week long toirnament every Summer, Juniors aged 8 up to 21 can enter into sigles and doubles events. Its a really fun event and over 100 Juniors, of all abilities enter from the Club.
About two years ago I decided to work on getting my rating down. I entered tournaments and am now getting the all important match experience I need to become a better tennis player. My rating is progressively getting better and I am aiming to become a 6.1 by the end of this Summer. I have also been playing for the Ladies' teams at Storrington. I started in the 5th team and have worked my way up over the years to and am now playing for the Ladies' 1st team. Last year I completed my level 1 tennis coaching course and now help the coaches at Storrington with the Mini's tennis.
